MCC ETS Dell All In One
Engineering PC QC Procedure SEC Room 230
January 29, 2023
Introduction
This HowTO explains how to image and QC the All-In-One Dell
computers that are in SEC 230. The image is fairly recent so there
is less configuration work than usual. Windows is current and
likely will not require updates. The browsers are already
configured and the QC steps there consist of quickly making sure
the home pages are properly set.
By default, a newly imaged All-In-One computer in room SEC-230
will log in as ETS Administrator on first boot after imaging. Make
sure this is the case.
Please note the power on button for these computers is along the
right side of the screen at the bottom. It is a narrow push
button.
After the computer starts there may be a “Networks” prompt with
message text “Do you want to allow your PC to be discoverable by
other PCs and devices on this network?”. If this prompt is posted
click Yes.
Rename the PC
Click to search > Rename and click on View your PC name.
Expand the About window to see Rename this PC (advanced) and
select Rename this PC (advanced)
Click the Computer Name tab, Change…, and enter the new computer
name in the form of SEC-RRR-nn where SEC is a constant, RRR is for
room 230, and nn is a sequence number. This value should be on a
label that is taped to the top of the computer screen. For
example, SEC-230-14.
Click OK > OK > Close > Restart now. Make sure the PC
restarts. Log back in as ETS Administrator.
Activate the student account
Click to file explorer. Right-click This PC and select Manage.
Click to Local Users and Groups > Users
Double click user Student. De-select Account is disabled. Make
sure Password never changes is selected. Click Apply > OK
Right-click Student and select Set Password > Proceed >
Enter new password and confirm password > Click OK
Close the computer management window.
Reboot the computer. Log back in to the ETS Admin account.
Enable Auto Logon for the Student Account
Click to This PC > Local Disk (C:) > Users > ETS >QC
Files > AutoLogon
Right-click Autologon64, select Run as Administrator, click Yes at
the confirmation prompt, and click Agree at the License Terms
prompt. Enter Student for username. Note the spelling and
capitalization. Make sure Domain is blank. For password enter
student.
Click Enable and click OK at the success message.
Restart the computer and make sure it logs in automatically to the
student account without prompts for user name or password.
Please note there are several subsequent steps that may ‘undo’
this setting and require doing it again. Typically, these steps
are the BIOS update, Windows Update, and setting the domain.
Click to the SOLIDWORKS 2022 folder
On the desktop is a folder named SOLIDWORKS 2022. Click on this
folder to open it up.
Delete the file named SOLIDWORKS 2022 SP4.0
Empty the trash bin and run the clear cache script.
Start SOLIDWORKS 2022. It may take a long time to initialize on
the first start, which is why you are doing it rather than impose
this burden on an engineering student. Click Accept at the license
prompt. Watch the progress messages. Make sure no errors are
posted. After SOLIDWORKS 2022 has completed initializing shut it
down.
To shut down Solidworks click SOLIDWORKS (upper LH corner) >
File > Exit.
Restart Solidworks 2022 four times. Make note of how long it takes
to start up each time. Expect the startup times to decrease down
to about 15 minutes.
Start SOLIDWORKS Electrical and then shut it down. Do this two
times. There may be a prompt from the Windows firewall with
message text “Windows Defender Firewall has blocked some features
of SOLIDWORKS Electrical 2022 SP4 on all public and private
networks”. If this message is posted click the “Allow access
button”. The message should only be posted on the first start of
SOLIDWORKS Electrical. Start it a second time to make sure the
message is no longer posted.
To shut down Solidworks Electrical click SOLIDWORKS (upper LH
corner) > File > Exit.
Restart the computer. Following reboot the computer should log in
to the Student account automatically.
Add the Domain setting
Tap the Windows logo key, type rename, and hit enter. The About
panel is displayed. Enlarge the panel to fill the entire computer
screen. Click the option to the right labeled ”Rename this PC
(advanced)”. Click the Change button. Click the Domain button.
Enter mclabs.net in the box below the Domain radio button. Click
OK. When prompted enter the ETS Lab Aide user name and password
with permission to join the domain. A message “Welcome to the
mclabs.net” is posted. Click OK. There is a prompt to reboot the
computer. Click OK > OK > Close > Restart Now
Following reboot there may be a prompt for the student account
login password. If this is the case log in and run Autologon64
again.
